Ensuite le respectable Subhûti, Mahâkâtyâyana, Mahâkâçyapa et Mahâmâudgalyâyana, tous également respectables, ayant entendu cette loi dont ils n'avaient pas ouï parler auparavant, et ayant appris, de la bouche de Bhagavat, que Çâriputtra était destiné à obtenir l'état suprême de Buddha parfaitement accompli, frappés d'étonnement, de surprise et de satisfaction, s'étant levés en ce moment même de leurs sièges, se dirigèrent vers la place où se trouvait Bhagavat; et rejetant sur une épaule leur vêtement supérieur, posant à terre le genou droit, tenant les mains jointes en signe de respect du côté où était assis Bhagavat, le regardant en face, le corps incliné en avant, l'extérieur modeste et recueilli, ils parlèrent en ces termes à Bhagavat :

They instantly rose from their seats and went up to the place where the Lord was sitting; after throwing their cloak over one shoulder, fixing the right knee on the ground and lifting up their joined hands before the Lord, looking up to him, their bodies bent, bent down and inclined, they addressed the Lord in this strain:
